A team from the Chinese government is currently in the Maldives for on-site investigations for the in-depth design of the hospital being developed in Vilimale’ with funding from the Chinese government.
The 11-member expert team dispatched to the Maldives from December 18th to January 15th conducted a site survey on Monday. The China–Maldives Friendship Hospital Project in Vilimale’ includes a 112-bed hospital built on a 12,900-square-metre site, featuring fully equipped medical units such as outpatient and emergency departments, diagnostic and laboratory facilities, treatment and inpatient services, as well as administrative offices. According to the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives, the project’s design is based on the core concept of “Oceanic Symbiosis and Cultural Integration,” blending regional characteristics with the cultural heritage of both China and the Maldives. Inspired by the natural landscape of the Maldivian islands, the design incorporates streamlined facades, a staggered layout, and a visual theme of “white walls and green islands,” allowing the structure to harmonize with its geographical and marine surroundings. The architecture symbolizes the “Chain of China–Maldives Friendship,” combining traditional Chinese cultural elements with Maldivian symbols to create a modern medical facility that reflects Eastern aesthetics and local identity. In addition, passive design features such as sunshades, a double-height atrium, and rooftop greenery promote natural ventilation, ample lighting, and a comfortable healing environment, reflecting a people-centred and environmentally sustainable design philosophy.
