The government is working towards introducing a new insurance scheme to cover vehicle damages.
According to the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, this new scheme will be introduced sometime in the next two months.
Male’ area is the most heavily traffic congested area in the country with road accidents reported on a frequent capacity that result in significant damages to the vehicles and also fatalities in more serious accidents.
While speaking at the ‘Ahaashey Bunaanan’ program on Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu (Voice of Maldives), the minister highlighted on the ongoing efforts to draft a new bill seeking to amend the legislation to improve roadside safety. The minister said that the government is aiming to completely resolve traffic issues through legal reforms.
He also noted that the government is carrying several initiatives to resolve traffic issues under the current legislation, including the planned introduction of a new ‘third-party insurance’ for vehicles.
Third-party insurances aim to cover damage to vehicles involved in accidents, the minister added. He also addressed the need for improving existing insurance mechanisms to ensure proprietors receive compensation for damaged vehicles.
“We are working on introducing a new insurance scheme with the support of all insurance service providers. We expect to introduce a new comprehensive insurance package in the next 45 to two months,” the minister commented.
Police statistics also showed that the most number of reported cases involved accidents, with 762 accidents reported in the first three months of 2025 while the number of vehicles getting damaged or destroyed in these accidents have increased as well.
According to police, the increase in road accidents is attributed to the high volume of vehicles in Male’ region as well as the recklessness of drivers.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier in September last year announced the government will be submitting a bill to the parliament aimed at introducing stricter road regulations.
