Self-exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed and leader of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that opposition coalition’s Presidential hopeful Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's pledge to begin taking income tax is the most important one that the coalition has made thus far.
After the opposition candidate revealed his decision to begin taking income tax from persons who reache a sufficient income, President Nasheed took to twitter to congratulate Solih for making the most important pledge he has made for the development of the nation after being elected as the opposition coalition’s candidate.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Solih revealed that a progress tax system will be introduced and a law will be passed to impose an income tax from persons who have a sufficient income.
Income tax was introduced to the Maldives in 2011 during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration. Although this was included in the tax system back then, it was not implemented.
