The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has dismissed its suspended Deputy Managing Director, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, following his prolonged suspension over an ongoing corruption investigation.
Fazeel was initially suspended from his post on 19 December last year, after the Maldives Police Service (MPS) launched an investigation into the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), concerning allegations of misconduct in the allocation of land plots under the previous government's 'Binveriyaa' housing scheme.
MWSC’s Board of Directors has now decided to remove Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed from his post. The company said the decision was taken to in the best interest of the company, adding that the board did not believe it was beneficial to the company to continue to retain Fazeel in a senior role under paid suspension for an extended period.
Authorities had earlier confiscated Fazeel’s phone and passport in connection with the corruption probe. The entire board of HDC, including the then Managing Director of HDC, Fazul Rasheed, was suspended in the wake of the scandal. While Fazul has since resigned, the board has been reinstated.
