Fazul’s brother, Fazeel dismissed after six months of paid suspension

Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced the dismissal of the company’s Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed after six months of paid suspension.
Fazeel was suspended on December 19, 2024, following allegations of corruption in the award of housing from Hulhumale’.
MWSC, via a post on X on Tuesday, said the company Board of Directors has decided to dismiss Fazeel from the post effective of tomorrow. According to the company, the Board came to the decision to protect the interests of the company.
Fazeel is the older brother of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, the former managing director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The authorities launched the investigation last year after documents leaked on social media on December 18 appeared to show that multiple people were given land from Hulhumale’ under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme despite not being on the list of recipients released in 2023 during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration.
Fazeel is among such recipients.
The final list of recipients of the ‘Binveriya’ scheme publicized in August 2023 lists Fazeel as an applicant, but also shows he was deemed ineligible as he had already been awarded housing under a different social housing scheme. However, the leaked documents show Fazeel has a land registry for a plot.
Fazul was also suspended in connection to the case. However, he resigned following his suspension.
Fazul played off the implication of his brother as a mere “coincidence”, and insisted that the situation does not pose a conflict of interest.

In his resignation later, Fazul maintained his innocence but said he decided to resign to “make for the investigation” into the case.
