Rise in private jet arrivals at Velana International Airport

Data released by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) indicate that the number of private jet arrivals to the Maldives has increased compared to the previous year.
Between 15 and 31 March, a total of 178 private jets landed in the country in 2026, compared to 134 during the same period in 2025, representing an increase of 32.8 per cent.
Over these 16 days, an average of more than 10 private jets arrived each day. The highest number of landings was recorded on 21 March, with 17 jets, while the lowest occurred on 26 March, with just five.
In contrast, statistics from 2025 show that the highest number of arrivals during this period was 13 jets, while the lowest stood at only two.
The Maldives Association for Travel Agencies and Tour Operators (MATATO) has attributed the rise in private jet arrivals to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The Middle East serves as a key transit region for travellers flying to the Maldives, with many airlines operating routes through this area. However, flight cancellations caused by the conflict have led some travellers to opt for private jets, contributing to the increase in arrivals.
Tourism organisations in the Maldives have stated that the conflict in the Middle East has not affected overall demand for travel to the country.
