Courts cancel hearings over Judge Abdulla Mohamed's arrest
Criminal Court media official, Ahmed Mohamed Manik said that the hearings have been cancelled due to the arrest of Judge Mohamed and the refusal of law enforcement authorities to obey court orders. He also said that even though court hearings have been cancelled, the court would still process cases for the extension of detention period for suspects in custody. High Court media official, Ameen Faisal said that ten hearings were scheduled for today, but due to the “emergency status faced by the judiciary” the High Court bench had met and decided to postpone the hearings to a later date. The Civil Court has said that the reason for postponing the hearings would be informed later, whilst the Juvenile Court is yet to decide whether to continue with the scheduled hearings today. The judiciary has raised their concern over the arrest of Judge Abdulla Mohamed last night. The high court, Supreme Court, and the Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizz have called on the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for the immediate release of Criminal court’s Chief Judge. Last night MNDF had refused to accept the orders from both the High Court and the Supreme Court, to release Judge Abdulla from custody.
