New Velana International Airport Terminal to Screen 1,200 Bags Per Hour with Advanced Baggage Handling System

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed that the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, scheduled to open on July 26, will feature a state-of-the-art baggage handling system capable of screening 1,200 pieces of luggage per hour.
The system, designed to process 20 pieces of luggage per minute, will operate 80 to 90 percent automatically, a significant improvement over the current terminal’s manual and time-consuming process. MACL emphasized that passengers will no longer need to scan their luggage before check-in. Instead, they can proceed directly to the check-in counters after showing their tickets. The new terminal includes 47 check-in counters and six self-check-in kiosks, providing a more spacious and efficient check-in area.
The baggage screening process at the new terminal will be completed in three phases:
Phase One involves fully automated screening using four cutting-edge Explosive Detection System (EDS) machines, the first 3D baggage screening technology of its kind in the Maldives. Bags flagged for further inspection will proceed to the second phase.
Phase Two includes manual verification by Aviation Security Command (AVSEC) officers and Maldives Customs Service officers. The area features 18 AVSEC and 22 Customs desks where flagged baggage is reviewed.
Phase Three serves as the final screening step, employing IATA-standard dual-view machines across six stations. Bags requiring further inspection are opened in designated areas in the presence of their owners, ensuring privacy and security.
In addition to enhancing outbound baggage handling, the new terminal will address passenger complaints about delays in retrieving luggage upon arrival. It will feature six high-speed baggage claim belts, up from four in the current terminal, to expedite delivery and reduce waiting times after immigration clearance.
MACL stated these upgrades represent a major step in streamlining passenger flow and elevating service standards at the country’s main international gateway.
