Over 5,800 Calls Attended by National Mental Health Helpline in First Half of 2025

The Ministry of Health has announced that the National Mental Health Helpline has responded to over 5,800 calls in the first six months of 2025, highlighting the growing reliance on mental health support services in the Maldives.
The helpline, launched on February 21, 2023, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s 14-week pledge, operates 24/7 and is accessible via 1677. It is designed to provide initial mental health support for individuals of all ages experiencing mental health concerns or crises.
Between its inception and the end of 2023, the helpline received 2,576 calls. This year alone, from January 1 to July 5, it has already responded to 5,820 calls, demonstrating a significant rise in public engagement.
According to the Health Ministry, the calls addressed a range of needs including crisis intervention, referrals, general mental health inquiries, and follow-up support. The helpline is staffed by licensed mental health professionals, ensuring callers receive appropriate and timely guidance.
Despite ongoing challenges such as limited human resources, the Ministry stated that it is committed to strengthening the helpline, expanding professional training, and advancing national mental health policies to improve access and quality of care throughout the country.
