A large-scale clean-up event titled "Waste to Art" was held this morning in L. Gan as part of activities marking World Environment Day 2025. The initiative was jointly organized by the Ministry of Environment and Parley Maldives, drawing participation from over 220 individuals across government institutions and local organizations.
According to the Ministry, more than 200 meters of coastline in L. Gan were cleaned between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM, during which 987.2 kilograms of plastic and other waste were collected. Participants included representatives from L. Atoll Council, L. Gan Council, MNDF, MTCC, and other partner institutions.
As part of the awareness effort, artworks were created using the collected waste, and prizes were awarded for the most creative entries. The initiative aimed to promote environmental responsibility, particularly among youth.
“We are celebrating World Environment Day in line with this year’s theme to raise public awareness about plastic,” said Mohamed Zahir, Director General at the Ministry of Environment. He emphasized that the event was designed to help children and the public better understand the environmental impact of improper waste disposal.
The event received strong public support and was praised for blending environmental action with creative expression to deliver a powerful message about sustainability.
