The Ministry of Finance has reported that the state has received MVR 976.4 million in Green Tax revenue so far this year, reflecting an 88% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
According to the Ministry’s latest Weekly Fiscal Development report, this amount—collected between January 1 and July 12—is significantly higher than the MVR 518.0 million received during the same timeframe last year.
The Green Tax is collected from every tourist visiting the Maldives and is deposited into the Green Fund, which finances island development and environmental sustainability projects. The tax was introduced in 2016 under former President Abdulla Yameen.
Currently, the tax is charged at $12 per night for tourists staying at resorts, hotels, and safari vessels, and $6 per night for those staying at guesthouses. Children under the age of two are exempt.
According to the Tourism Ministry, 1,074,703 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year—a 9.1% increase compared to the same period last year. With 2 million tourist arrivals in 2023, the government now aims to reach 2.3 million arrivals by the end of 2025.
