56% of youth population unemployed: NBS

National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed 56% of the youth population are unemployed and not in the education system.
Statistics published by NBS show the Maldives youth population consists of 257,215 individuals, including 188,092 males and 69,123 females. The number of youths is 45% of the total population, which is a 2% increase compared to last year.
The statistics show 41% of young women and 15% of young men are currently not working or not in the education system. NBS stated the reason for the high number of unemployed women is likely due to many young women taking care of their families and managing work at home.
A total of 89,956 young people are currently employed and 12% have achieved higher education, while 77% have achieved a secondary education. The government has stated it is working with relevant institutions to provide more educational and employment opportunities to young people.
