China’s famous online-shopping firm، Alibaba has announced that it will be launching an online video streaming service in the country within the next two months time.
The company’s head of digital entertainment، Patrick Liu، said that it is hoping to mimic the success of services like Netflix and HBO.
“Our mission، the mission of all of Alibaba، is to redefine home entertainment،” Liu said at a press conference in Shanghai، adding “Our goal is to become like HBO in the United States، to become like Netflix in the United States.”
The online streaming service، which Alibaba is calling TBO (Tmall Box Office) will be buying content from outside China and other countries as well as، create in-house movies. Earlier this year، Alibaba had announced that it was making a movie with one of most popular directors in the country.
In addition to this، Liu says 90-percent of the content will be behind a paywall while the remaining 10-percent of contents will be available for free.
