Elections Commission approves ex-president's political party

Elections Commission (EC) has on Thursday approved the formation of former President Abdulla Yameen’s new party, People’s National Congress (PNC).
While the former president is currently the leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the application was filed by PPM’s former deputy Abdul Raheem Abdulla; he left the party on Tuesday as a prior application was rejected due to him being signed to PPM.
Commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that Raheem has been given the green light to move ahead with procedural matters for registering the party.
They are to first submit forms of 3,000 members to the electoral body- within three months- who will then given the go ahead to hold PNC’s inaugural assembly.
While Yameen has begun work to form a new political party, a case regarding PPM’s leadership is currently at the Supreme Court.
He has already given PPM tickets, to contest in April’s parliamentary elections without a primary, to 42 individuals.
However, if he loses the case at court which is yet to commence, the former president said that these individuals will be contesting through the new party.
