The Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment successfully conducted a one-day hands-on training workshop on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimation from the energy sector.
The training was conducted under the Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives) Project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The objective of the training was to enhance participants’ technical skills in compiling GHG emissions inventories for the energy sector, with a focus on stationary combustion and transport-related emissions, the Ministry said.
The training aimed to familiarise participants with the IPCC 2006 Guidelines and provide hands-on experience using the IPCC Inventory Software, enabling them to apply standardised methods for emissions estimation, data management, and QA/QC procedures, it added.
According to the Ministry, this capacity-building effort supports national obligations under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement and contributes to the preparation of Maldives’ Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs).
The workshop was opened by the Special Envoy for Climate Change, Ali Shareef, who provided an overview of the training and emphasised its importance in strengthening national capacity for climate reporting.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all participants who successfully completed the training.
At the closing ceremony, the Minister of State for Tourism and Environment, Ibrahim Mimrah, highlighted the importance of building institutional capacity to strengthen national systems for climate data and transparency. He emphasised that such training programmes are essential for meeting the Maldives’ reporting commitments under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement.
The training was delivered by Zammath Khaleel, of Development Advisory Services (DAS) Pvt Ltd, under the consultancy for GHG Inventory Expert through the CBIT Maldives Project.
A total of 22 participants attended the training, including representatives from the Climate Change and Energy Departments of the Ministry, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Maldives Customs Services, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), State Trading Organisation (STO), and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
