The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a notable increase in the number of influenza cases detected in June compared to May, based on recent testing statistics.
According to HPA data, 608 people were tested for influenza symptoms in June, with 185 testing positive—nearly double the number of tests and positives recorded in May, when 269 people were tested and 98 were confirmed cases. So far in 2025, a total of 1,489 individuals have been tested, with 371 testing positive for influenza.
Despite the rise in influenza cases, the overall number of commonly reported communicable diseases in the Maldives decreased during June compared to the previous month.
Influenza, which spreads through the respiratory system, typically presents symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and general illness. The H1N1 strain, a subtype of Influenza A virus (IAV), remains the most commonly detected influenza variant in the Maldives.
