The European Union (EU) has raised concerns over the conviction of former President and the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed.
Criminal Court on Friday night sentenced Ex-President Nasheed to 13 years in prison for the alleged terrorism crime of unlawfully detaining Judge Abdulla ‘Gaazee’ Mohamed in 2012.
Following the sentence، EU’s spokesperson released a statement saying the conviction of Nasheed raises very serious questions about the independence of the judiciary.
“The conviction of former President Mohamed Nasheed for charges under anti-terrorist legislation raises very serious questions about due process of law and risks undermining people’s trust in the independence of the judiciary.”
The organization further stated following the aspects of legal process and an independent judiciary، in accordance with provisions of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)، are central elements of the democratic process.
“All citizens must be treated in accordance with these provisions، to which the Maldives have a binding obligation.”
Furthermore، EU had urged Maldivian commissions to accord Ex-President Nasheed with all his rights، including the adequate access to his lawyers، if the conviction be appealed.
“Should the conviction be appealed، the appeal process must be fair and transparent.”
In addition، EU called on all sides of Maldives to act responsibly and uphold the constitutional freedoms.
