Maldives Police Service arrested a man in a northern island for the sexual abuse of a 6-year-old girl on Monday.
According to the police, the 27-year-old suspect was arrested after Police received reports of the crime earlier the same day.
The police revealed that the abuse occurred in an island in the Upper North Police Division, which comprises the atolls of Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani.
They stated that both the suspect and victim were from the same island, but did not disclose further information in order to protect the identity of the child.
This is the latest in a string of child sexual abuse cases that were reported to and publicised by the authorities this year, after a harrowing case of a toddler, who was sexually abused by her grandfather and great-grandfather in Kanduhulhudhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, shocked the country in mid-January.
