His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has hailed the Maldives’ election to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term, marking the first time the country has secured a seat on the Council in its 60 years of membership of the United Nations.
In a post shared on his official X account, the President described the achievement as a proud and historic milestone for the nation, noting that the election reflects the trust and confidence the international community places in the Maldives and its commitment to constructive multilateral engagement.
The President emphasised that, as a Small Island Developing State, the Maldives understands first-hand the urgent challenges faced by vulnerable nations, including climate change, economic resilience and sustainable development. He stated that the seat on ECOSOC provides a stronger platform from which to advocate for the priorities and aspirations of Small Island Developing States and developing countries around the world.
The President affirmed that the Maldives will work closely with its partners to strengthen international cooperation, accelerate progress towards sustainable development, and contribute to a fairer and more resilient multilateral system.
