Nasheed's campaign manager proposes MP Solih as MDP presidential candidate

A resolution has been submitted to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s national congress, proposing parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as its presidential candidate for the upcoming polls.
The resolution was submitted by North-Hithadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Aslam, who was the campaign manager for MDP's leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
While Nasheed won the party ticket at the primary held on May 30, he has decided to withdraw from the presidential race, citing Elections Commission's insistence that he will not be allowed to contest.
However, the resolution notes that Nasheed will run in the presidential election slated for September 23 "if possible", even if Solih is approved as the candidate.
The opposition coalition on Friday announced its decision to field a common candidate for the election, with a presidential candidate from MDP and running mate from Jumhooree Party.
