Elections Commission (EC) chief Ahmed Shareef has said it is important to have a responsible opposition party with a leadership established according to the set laws and regulations.
Shareef said this in a tweet on Tuesday, possibly in response to criticisms from members of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Sarkaarah faaraverivaane zimmaadhaaru idhikolhu party eh othun muhimmu, gaanoonthakaa gawaaidhu thakaa ekamah hedhifaivaa usooluthakaa ehgothah binaakuraa leadership ehge dhashun ekan kureveynee.
EC has questioned the current leadership of PPM and refused to recognize its last congress, at which former President Abdulla President Abdulla Yameen was made party leader.
EC stated that the PPM congress violated set procedures and so does not recognize any decision or appointments made at the event.
After Yameen’s devastating loss at the election, PPM is now the Maldives’ main opposition party.
