Ismail Naveen Appointed as Maldives Police Commissioner

Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naveen has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner of the Maldives Police Service, effective today. The appointment follows the resignation of former Police Commissioner Ali Shujau, which left the position vacant.
Naveen, who had been temporarily overseeing the operations of the Police Service, was selected for the role after a competitive process. The Police Board opened applications for the position, receiving submissions from Naveen, Deputy Commissioner Faruhad Fikury, and South Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shameem. The Board evaluated all three candidates and determined that each met the qualifications required for the role, as stipulated by legal standards.
Under the Maldives Police Act, the Police Commissioner is appointed by the President based on the recommendation of the Minister, following the Police Board’s evaluation and submission of qualified candidates. The Act also mandates that a new Commissioner be appointed within 45 days of the position becoming vacant, a requirement met with Naveen’s appointment.
Naveen’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Maldives Police Service, with his prior experience as Deputy Commissioner positioning him to lead the force effectively. The government and the Police Board expressed confidence in his ability to uphold the responsibilities of the role and maintain public safety.
