No Maldivian Casualties in Sri Lanka Floods; High Commission Issues Safety Advisory

The Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka has confirmed that no Maldivian casualties have been reported so far amid the severe flooding affecting the country.
The High Commission stated that it is closely monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka as adverse weather continues across the island nation.
Addressing reports that a Maldivian family had gone missing, the High Commission told PSM News that there had been difficulty in contacting the family earlier. However, communication has since been established and the matter resolved, the High Commission confirmed.
In a statement, the High Commission urged Maldivians in the country to follow the safety advice issued. They advised avoiding travel unless necessary, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides. The Commission also warned against going outdoors during heavy rains and strong winds, encouraging the public to follow the updates from the Sri Lankan Meteorological Department.
The High Commission further advised residents to secure essential supplies including staple food, water, keep important documents safe, and keep their mobile phones fully charged. Those travelling from Sri Lanka to the Maldives are advised to check their flight information for updates and leave for the airport well in advance.
The High Commission added that authorities have issued warnings about overflowing rivers, and advised those residing in affected areas as well as in low-lying areas and coastal zones to be vigilant, and evacuate to safer locations if necessary. Those requiring local assistance were asked to contact the Commission's hotline at 94768116666.
More than 50 people have been killed in Sri Lanka's worst rainfall in recent history. At least 21 people have been reported missing, and thousands have been displaced. The Sri Lankan Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the entire country for the first time.
