Minister Geela stresses collective responsibility for child safety

The Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Geela Ali, has underscored that a safe society for children can only be realised through collective effort.
In her keynote, marking National Children’s Day by inaugurating the “Consultation on Child Rights” at the Meerumaa Hotel, the Minister highlighted that recent years have seen relentless work to reinforce children’s‑rights policies, formulate robust legislation, and launch initiatives aimed at guaranteeing basic rights.
She noted that the Maldives takes pride in being among the nations that have signed and ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a step that has helped identify priority areas for protecting the vulnerable.
“The progress we have achieved demonstrates that our commitment is delivering results,” she said, adding that her Ministry is focused on improving the mental and social well‑being of the population.
As a result, the Children’s Rights Protection Act has been strengthened and public‑awareness campaigns have been rolled out to safeguard children’s entitlements, ensuring access to quality education and greater societal sensitivity, she added.
The event also saw the launch of the child‑rights magazine “Amaanaaiy” by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
Organised by the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare, the “Discussion on Child Rights” aims to deliberate on the challenges children face and chart pathways for their protection.
