The Vaavu Atoll Council has announced plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the harbor areas of all five inhabited islands of Vaavu Atoll—Felidhoo, Fulidhoo, Keyodhoo, Rakeedhoo, and Thinadhoo—to enhance social security and safety for residents. The decision reflects the council’s commitment to addressing security concerns in the atoll, which, despite having the smallest population in the Maldives, has seen a surge in tourist arrivals due to the growing guesthouse business.
The council extended the deadline for expressions of interest in the project to 10:00 AM on Monday, June 30, 2025, and held an information session today to provide details to potential stakeholders. According to the council, Fulidhoo will receive the highest number of cameras, with 24 units allocated, followed by Felidhoo and Keyodhoo, each slated for 16 cameras. Thinadhoo will have 12 cameras installed, while Rakeedhoo will receive 8 cameras.
The council emphasized that the CCTV installation is a critical initiative to bolster safety across the atoll’s harbor areas, which serve as vital hubs for both residents and visitors. The project aligns with efforts to modernize infrastructure in Vaavu Atoll, where tourism has become a significant economic driver. The rise in guesthouse operations, particularly on islands like Fulidhoo, has attracted increasing numbers of tourists, necessitating enhanced security measures to ensure a safe environment for all.
