President Dr Mohamed Muizzu outlined the Government's commitment to delivering essential services to its citizens. The President made these remarks whilst delivering the Presidential Address at today's opening session of the People's Majlis for 2025.
The President emphasised the importance of ensuring access to banking services for every citizen from their island. He highlights that by the end of this year, Bank of Maldives (BML) ATMs will be established and services will be available on every inhabited island, regardless of population size. The Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) plans to install ATMs on 19 islands, with an additional 10 islands set to receive ATMs in 2026.
The President highlighted that an active lifestyle is essential for a happy life. He announced that, over the next two years, every inhabited island in the Maldives will have a well-equipped, high-quality children's park, an outdoor gym suitable for all age groups, and a resource-friendly fitness and recreation centre.
During the Address, the President announced that harbour development would align with the Government's budget to assist islands facing developmental challenges. He mentioned that construction work on harbours is already in progress on 52 islands, with projects set to commence on an additional 10 islands this year. Additionally, the Government has established water supply systems on 45 islands and sewerage systems on 40 islands. The President highlighted that efforts to construct water supply systems on 56 islands and improve sanitation access on 45 islands will be completed within the next two years.
As part of efforts to ensure the safety of the water supply in the Malé area, the pipe installed on the Sinamalé Bridge will be used to provide water to the city, a project set for completion this year. He noted that water production in the Malé area would be increased by 25 per cent, and the water storage capacity would be boosted by 30 per cent within the year.
Speaking on the occasion, the President highlighted that a national waste management project called 'Magey Saafu Rajje' has been developed and implemented.
