Police app to expose scam numbers, update every 8 hours

The Maldives Police Service is preparing to launch a new mobile application called 'Police.mv' to help combat cybercrime by exposing scam-related data, including phone numbers, account details, and phishing links.
Inspector of Police Azeef Abbas announced the initiative during a program aired on state media Friday evening. He said the app is designed to raise public awareness about cybercrime and provide real-time updates on scam activity.
“The application will update every eight hours. Anyone can check the latest scam reports through it,” Abbas said.
He added that the app will allow users to submit scam-related data they receive, such as suspicious calls or messages, which will then be validated by police before being published.
“If someone receives a scam call, we can import the data from that person, validate it, and publish it,” he explained.
The app is part of a broader government effort to tackle rising cybercrime in the Maldives. Last year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu approved amendments to the Penal Code that criminalize unauthorized access to computer systems and data, and facilitate international cooperation on cybercrime investigations.
According to police statistics, scams are on the rise. Between September 28 and October 4, cybercriminals stole MVR 300,000 through various schemes. Authorities managed to recover MVR 200,000 from suspects during that period.
The Maldives Police Service has also been active in international cybercrime operations. Earlier this year, it participated in INTERPOL’s “Operation Secure,” which dismantled thousands of malicious IP addresses and domains linked to info-stealing malware.
