Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) revealed today that 41 hectares of land have been reclaimed within 20 days of starting work under a massive project to reclaim land for airport development and other essential needs in HA. Dhidhdhoo.
Under this project to reclaim the western side of Dhidhdhoo, a total of over 110 hectares of land is scheduled to be added to the island. According to MACL, 36.6 percent of the project, which began physical work on the fifth of this month, has now been fully completed.
A massive dredger named “Leiv Eiriksson,” belonging to Luxembourg, is being used to carry out this project. Measuring 223 meters in length and 41 meters in width, this dredger is a world-class modern vessel capable of extracting 46,000 cubic meters of sand per day.
Building an airport in Dhidhdhoo is a pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Meeting with the residents of the island in January last year, the President stated that the Dhidhdhoo airport is an important part of the regional development policy. He also mentioned that his next visit to the island would be on the first flight to attend the airport’s opening ceremony.
Once this project is completed, it will provide a permanent solution to the land scarcity issues facing Dhidhdhoo. The government states that in addition to the airport, the newly reclaimed land will create space for housing projects and other economic purposes.
