First Lady calls for greater women’s participation in policing

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for increased participation of women officers in frontline police operations and case investigations.
She made the remark while speaking at the inauguration of the Maldives Women in Policing Committee (2026–2028).
The First Lady said the perception that policing is a “male-only” profession should change, and women’s full participation must be ensured. She stressed that increasing women in policing improves public trust and cooperation, especially in handling sensitive cases like sexual and domestic violence.
The First Lady highlighted the need for capacity building, encouraging women to take on frontline, investigative, and technical roles instead of being limited to administrative work.
She also urged stronger mentoring systems and greater representation of women in policy-making committees. She noted that while women’s participation is high in the Maldives in sectors like education and health, it remains low in policing and needs improvement.
The First Lady said economic and social progress depends on peace, security and stability, stressing that the police service should ensure the basic foundation of security needed for national development. She described the role of the police in maintaining the rule of law as a national service to provide a safe and prosperous future for future generations.
