More women needed in tourism sector: Minister Adheeb

Speaking at the function held at the National Art Gallery to mark the closing of the apprenticeship programme conducted by the Four Seasons Resort in 2013, Minister Adheeb said that it was time for people to change their negative perception of the women working in the tourism industry. He said that while the tourism industry was earning the most income into the Maldives, it was not right for people to think that the resort working environments are unsafe for women. "We can't say that the resort working environments are unsafe for women. It is a most safe place for women to work at. Maldivian tourism has become high class now, and it is a grievous matter that there are not many women in the field. I call upon those working for women's rights to change these misconceptions and to urge as many women as possible to work in tourism", the Minister beseeched. The minister went on to explain that resort accommodations and other services needed to comply with accommodating women. Adding that resorts have now started providing pool and spa services to their staff, the Minister said that the tourism industry is an ideal path for unemployed youth to go forward in careers. "30 percent of tourists who visit the Maldives are repeat-tourists; they return to the Maldives again because of the personal and immaculate service they are given by Maldivian butlers and other staff in the resorts. Apart from breathing in the Maldivian beauty, they also wish to experience Maldivian hospitality. We need Maldivians in this industry", Adheeb continued. Minister also said that the apprenticeship programme conducted by the Four Seasons resort is an exemplary idea to the Maldives. He added that the importance the resort gave to hiring local staff also was an example that should be followed by other resorts. "I have not seen youth motivated this way. They are most interested to work these jobs. This proves the success of this programme", Adheeb proclaimed. The Four Seasons training programme conducted to employ high school graduates at the resort - 38 participants who completed the course have been employed. Another 62 people will be trained in areas like; water sports, dive masters and staff for the food and beverages services this year.
