Health Minister Abdullah Nazim has expressed concerns about the Thalassemia prevalence rate in Maldives even though people are aware of how the disease spreads.
Speaking at a ceremony held today to award notification letter to the children who got selected for bone-marrow transplant this year by Zakath Foundation, the minister expressed concern about this issue.
At the moment there are 800 Thalassemia patients in Maldives. So far this year 13 children have been registered. Minister Nazim requested to be more aware and careful about it. He said that this government prioritizes social development to development of infrastructure.
Minister Nazim also highlighted the help given to Thalassemia patients by First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim. “ When I got appointed as the minister, Madam Faathun was the first to call me. On my third day I had to meet her. She asked me to give special attention to Thalassemia patients” said Nazim.
