All members of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) from an island, Faafu atoll Feeali have resigned from the party.
PPM members from the island also dissolved the party office. Speaking to Vnews, a member of PPM from the island said that the party office has been resolved and now only two members of PPM remain in the island.
“They are the island’s PPM branch’s Deputy President and the Council member who won the seat through a PPM ticket. All other members from the whole island have resigned now,” he said.
He said that all of the members made this sudden unified decision to resign and dissolve the PPM branch of the island because of the recent actions of the government. The islanders say that they are totally disappointed with the government.
“The truth is that we resigned from PPM because of the ongoing tyranny of the government against the Jumhooree Party leader, Gasim Ibrahim. He is a very close to us. He helps each and every one of us from this island. So when the government is oppressing such a person how can we give any preference to the party over him?,” a top activist of PPM from the island said.
Many of the supports of PPM from the island are very close to Nasreena Ibrahim, the wife of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. However, they say that they cannot remain in the while there is no more value of Gayoom and Nasreena in the party today.
It is reported from the islanders that the members will be joining Jumhooree Party soon along with the PPM branch’s Deputy President and the Council member.
“We will wipe out PPM from the island. In this regard, we have all resigned and dissolved the party branch in the island. There will be no PPM in the island ever again,” he said.
