Former foreign minister Dunya Maumoon has said that she does not accept former President Mohamed nasheed’s prison conviction.
Dunya had been the first foreign minister of President Abdulla Yameen's administration when it saw Nasheed’s trial and conviction on state terrorism charges.
In an interview with news outlet Avas, Dunya said she had seen numerous cases of misconduct when she worked in the administration, especially Nasheed’s ‘rushed’ trial, adding that she had to deal with the subsequent negative international attention.
Noting that other political leaders were also slapped with terrorism-related charges at the time, she said that it was difficult to answer to the various enquiries from the international community.
She said that while she respects all the treaties that Maldives is party to, she does not believe that Nasheed should be freed on the basis of a ruling from the United Nations and that ultimately the country should make its own decision, or risk losing its sovereignty.
