Digital growth targeted as PayPal opens door for global platforms, economic minister says

The trust placed in the Maldives by PayPal serves as an open door for the arrival of other payment gateways, Mohamed Saeed, the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, has announced recently. Appearing on the ‘Trade Desk with Ana’ podcast to detail the administration's technological ambitions, Minister Saeed noted that this digital milestone results from efforts by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to resolve concerns raised by content creators and producers during his electoral campaign.
For generations, the Maldivian economy has relied heavily on specific traditional sectors, a dependency President Muizzu believes is no longer sustainable amid rapid global technological advancements, Minister Saeed explained. The future of the island nation lies in the President's ‘Maldives 2.0’ vision to unlock numerous opportunities for the country's youth that were previously inaccessible, he added.
Securing PayPal's confidence marks a critical step toward modernising the digital economy of a small nation, an achievement expected to pave the way for broader financial integration, Minister Saeed said. "The arrival of PayPal, and their belief and trust in the Maldives, will serve as a stepping stone to modernise the nation by integrating numerous similar e-wallets and payment gateways, further unifying the Maldivian financial system," Minister Saeed stated.
Discussions between President Muizzu and Google have led to a new project being implemented by the tech giant in the Maldives, which represents another crucial stride for the nation's future, Minister Saeed observed. Earning the trust of such a massive global corporation to execute a major project in a small country is a source of pride for every citizen, he added. The government is actively working to establish mechanisms that will allow citizens to generate income from platforms that are highly popular among Maldivian content creators, such as TikTok and YouTube, Minister Saeed confirmed.
