A “Re-employment Bill” has been submitted to the People’s Majlis seeking to allow state employment until the age of 75.
The bill was presented on behalf of the government by Guradhoo constituency MP Hanan Mohamed Rashid.
The purpose of the bill is to establish principles and guidelines for re-employment opportunities for state employees up to 75 years of age, including criteria for eligibility and procedures for implementation.
According to the bill:
- Current state employees aged 65–75 who wish to continue working may apply for re-employment.
- Retired individuals who became eligible for pension up to 7 years before the law takes effect may also be considered.
- Employees must apply for re-employment 6 months before turning 65, while already retired individuals must apply within 4 months of the law’s enactment.
- Re-employment will be based on annually renewable contracts, with employees either reinstated to previous roles or assigned to new ones.
The bill also stipulates that salaries and benefits for re-employed individuals will follow National Pay Commission standards. However, those re-employed will not receive the basic pension given at age 65, though they will still receive other pension benefits as allowed by law.
The law will not apply to military personnel, police officers, judges, or individuals appointed under the Constitution or other laws.
