Jumhoory Party (JP) has joined main opposition party – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in refusing to sign off on the voters’ lists for the upcoming local council elections prepared by Elections Commission.
JP’s spokesperson, Ali Solih reported to “Sun” that said they party went to sign off on the voters’ lists this Tuesday. But refused to sign off when they were presented with three lists all in different formats.
“One list had ID (identity card) numbers. Another list had photos. The other list had neither ID card nor date of birth. So we refuse to sign off being presented with three different lists,” said Solih.
Solih said he wasn’t aware the lists had different versions. And that JP would sign off on the lists as soon as EC corrected the error.
No. 5 of the guideline issued by Supreme Court declaring results of presidential election in 2013 void states that the EC and candidates or representatives of the candidates need to verify the final voters’ lists.
EC member Ahmed Akram in a press briefing this Tuesday to address concerns over the voters’ lists said the lists included the full name, address, identity card numbers as well as photos of all the voters.
The deadline set for candidates or their representatives to sign the voters’ lists is 10 pm, this Tuesday.
