President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the former President Mohamed Nasheed has refused to the appeal of his 13-year jail sentence for ordering the illegal detention of the Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Gaazee.
A statement issued by Nasheed’s office has confirmed the news.
The statement indicates that the refusal to the appeal by Nasheed is due to the “insufficient time given for preparations of the appeal procedure”.
The statement further indicated that the detailed report needed for the appeal procedure has been provided by the Criminal Court even though the request was made on March 15.
“The foremost document needed to appeal against the proven terrorism charges is the report of how the trial concluded، according to President Nasheed” read the statement.
The statement further indicated that “there is no other way to compare the information included in the report and the actual process happened in the court. The report will indicate the testimonies of the witnesses، the testimonies regarding the documentary evidences and the decisions taken by the Presiding Bench when the trial was ongoing.”
The statement has highlighted that the Criminal Court has not provided the report of how the trial has been concluded and has obstructed the appealing right provided in the Constitution.
Nasheed will be provided with the report someday and when the day arrives، Nasheed will be proven innocent، indicated the statement.
Meanwhile، Criminal Court has stated that the report of the trial was delayed lack of support provided by President Nasheed and his legal team.
Criminal Court has stated that President Nasheed had been constantly refusing to sign the statements given in the proceedings and as well the legal team was not supportive even though they were called to sign the statements.
