Spokesperson of the Progressive Party of Maldives, (PPM) and Kelaa constituency MP, Ali Arif has said that the party has not held any discussions regarding increasing the presidential term to 7 years.
Quoting Ali Arif, DhiTV stated that the party had not held any talks not ever to increase the presidential term from 5 years to 7 years.
MDP Deputy Leader Ali Waheed last night alleged that the ruling party PPM have been holding talks to increase the presidential term to 7 years via their majority in the Peoples’ Majlis.
Ali Arif said that this is a lie spread by MDP to cause unrest and confusion.
Former Human Rights Ambassador of the President’s Office, Sandhaanu Ahmed Didi also recently stated that he received information that the government is trying to increase the Presidential Term from 5 to 7 years.
Meanwhile, the government coalition have submitted an amendment to define the maximum age of the Presidential candidates to be below 65 years.
