Gov’t to prioritise modernising main roads under Chinese grant aid

The government will give first priority under the ambitious road modernisation project for the construction of main roads, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said.
The Minister made these comments during a site visit to inspect the progress of surveys and research works required for the development of roads in Male' and Villimale'. The inspection was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xinhua.
Minister Muththalib explained that the decision to seek Chinese government assistance for the project stems from the need for technical expertise to find permanent solutions to the island's chronic congestion, flooding, and traffic problems. He emphasised that the project is being carried out under a grant with Chinese technical assistance rather than direct expenditure from the state budget.
The feasibility study, according to the Minister, has highlighted that, considering the current condition of the city and flooding problems, this project must be based on very detailed surveys. The first part of the project will be divided into two phases, with detailed designs prepared for all roads in Male' and Villimale’ where priority will be given to finding appropriate solutions to flooding and other road-related difficulties, he said.
According to the minister, the project will begin with the construction of roads leading to hospitals, including areas most prone to flooding such as the road in front of IGMH and Shaheed Ali Hingun.
"We hope to complete critical physical works later this year or early next year. The most important roads, including Majeedhee Magu, Kanbaa-aisaranee Magu, and the road leading to Villimale' Hospital, will be completed within this timeframe,” he said.
Chinese Ambassador Kong Xinhua described the project as a symbol of the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries.
"The detailed design works are currently being completed, and necessary preparations are underway to start the practical work. The work that has already been completed is good, but the work to be done is challenging,” he said.
The Chinese government arranged grant aid for the project during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to China.
