The Chinese government has signed an agreement to do cataract surgery on 100 patients in the Hulhumalé Hospital.
The agreement was signed today at a special ceremony at the Health Ministry.
While the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Fukang signed the agreement on behalf of the Chinese government, the Maldivian government was represented by the Health Minister, Iruthisham Adam.
Talking to the press after the signing ceremony, Minister Iruthisham Adam said that the Chinese government would be sending a mission with doctors and nurses to the Maldives under the agreement signed today along with the equipment required for the cataract surgeries.
She said that the Chinese team would arrive in the country towards the end of the year and begin working at the Hulhumalé Hospital. Minister Iruthisham said that a list of 100 patients that needs the cataract surgery has been established from the health centers and hospitals across the country.
Health Minister Iruthisham said that the free-aid project by the Chinese government is welcomed by the Maldivian government expressed her gratitude on behalf of the country.
She said that the equipment being brought to the country for the surgeries would be donated to the hospitals in the Maldives.
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye leading to a decrease in vision.
