Life imprisonment for man who smuggled drugs to Gulhi

Gulhi Magistrate Court has sentenced a man who smuggled drugs into the island in Male’ atoll to life imprisonment.
The Court sentenced Mohamed Nihan, Greenpeas, K. Gulhi, to life imprisonment last week.
Nihan was accused of smuggling drugs into Gulhi on a speedboat that traveled to the island in late May 2024.
According to the case report, Nihan was arrested on the evening of May 29, 2024, based on a tip received to Police Intelligence. Drugs were discovered from his bag during a search following his arrest and he was subsequently charged with cannabis trafficking.
Nihan denied the charges against him during the trial, claiming he was framed by the Police.
However, the case report shows that Nihan’s urine tested positive for drugs.
Nihan sought leniency after the Court found him guilty of drug trafficking. However, Gulhi Magistrate Court’s Chief Magistrate Hammadh Ali, who presided over the cas,e sentenced him to life imprisonment and fined him by MVR 100,000.
A life imprisonment in the Maldives accounts for 25 years. After deducting the amount of time he has already spent in custody during the investigation and trial stages, Nihan has to serve 24 years, nine months and four months in prison.
