Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been shifted to Maafushi jail after two months in house arrest.
Nasheed is currently serving a 13 year jail sentence on terror charges. Speaking to media, Correctional Service Spokesperson Rameez stated that no as decision had been made on his rest of his jail sentence and therefore, he will be serving the sentence in Maafushi. Nasheed’s legal team had refuted this statement and publicly revealed a document allegedly stating that Nasheed is to serve his jail term under house arrest.
Supporters of Nasheed had attempted to prevent correctional service employees in removing Nasheed from his residence, M. Yaagoothuge. Police used force to control the crowd. Many had sought emergency treatment at the hospital.
Nasheed was transferred to Maafushi from T-jetty area. Many have called for his release, both locally and internationally, citing that his arrest was a barrier to democratic processes.
