Maldives Rolls-Out First Ever Certificate-Level Sign Language Course

The Ministry of Social and Family Development, in a landmark partnership with the Maldives National University (MNU), has announced the opening of the country's first-ever certificate-level course in sign language.
The Sign Language Certificate Level 3 course is a six-month programme designed to build a more compassionate and inclusive society, a key pillar of the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for the nation.
Applications for the inaugural intake are now open, welcoming individuals over the age of 18 who have completed their GCSE and Certificate Level education. The initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring that citizens with hearing disabilities can fully participate in society and comfortably access essential services.
This new certificate course is the latest in a series of government efforts to promote sign language communication. The Ministry has previously launched an online sign language programme for employees in government institutions and state-owned companies. That programme saw participation from over 130 individuals across various ministries and state corporations, aiming to improve communication for hearing-impaired individuals when accessing state services.
Building on the success of these basic programmes, the Ministry is also preparing to launch an online sign language advanced programme.
The new collaboration with MNU to offer a certified course elevates these efforts by embedding sign language proficiency within the national education system.
Currently, sign language is primarily used by individuals with hearing impairments and their families. This new course aims to change that by familiarising a broader public with the language. By increasing the number of citizens fluent in sign language, it will become easier for hearing-impaired individuals to engage in the workforce, access services, and participate in community activities.
Ultimately, these initiatives are designed to foster a more compassionate and equitable society, where no individual is excluded and everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.
