The Maldives National University (MNU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social and Family Development, is set to introduce the first-ever Level 3 Certificate Course in Sign Language in the Maldives. This milestone initiative is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to build a more inclusive and compassionate society, ensuring equal access to services for people with hearing disabilities.
The six-month course is open to Maldivians aged 18 and above who have successfully completed GCE O'Level and Certificate Level 2 qualifications. The program aims to equip participants with comprehensive skills in sign language, enabling effective communication with the deaf and hard-of-hearing community across various sectors.
As part of the government’s efforts to raise awareness and capacity, over 130 staff from government agencies and companies have already participated in a foundational online sign language program. Additionally, the Ministry is preparing to roll out an advanced online sign language training, building on this momentum.
This pioneering effort marks a significant step forward in promoting accessibility, inclusivity, and human rights in the Maldives.
