An international team of lawyers have been established in defence of the former president Mohamed Nasheed who is currently serving a 13 year prison sentence.
The press release issued by the office of the former president said that the international team of lawyers would do anything to free President Nasheed. The team consists of Jared Genser, Ben Emmerson (QC) and Amal Clooney.
Jared Genser is the founder of Freedom Now, a non-profit organization working to free political prisoners. Ben Emmerson QC is a British lawyer specializing in human rights law. And Amal Clooney is famous lawyer in Public International Law, International Criminal Law and Human Rights Law.
The former president’s office said that the first task of the international team would be to work with the Maldivian team of lawyers and present Nasheed’s case to UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
“Lawyers of President Nasheed believes that he (Nasheed)is being imprisoned without any order.” Says the former president’s office.
While Nasheed’s team of lawyers are preparing to present his case to UN, International and Regional Commissions and Courts, President Nasheed has decided not to go to appeal on his 13 year prison sentence.
