First hearing on Najeeb murder case to begin today
Ahmed Murrath of Maafannu Masroora and Fathmath Hana of Shaviyani Atoll Goidhoo, Rihaab is being charged with first degree murder, and the first hearing of the case will be held sometime today. Both Murrath and Hana confessed to the brutal stabbing murder of prominent lawyer Ahmed Najeeb yesterday when brought to the Criminal Court to extend their detainment and had detailed how the murder had been carried out. However, given the hearing had been held behind closed doors the exact proceedings are unclear to Haveeru. But Haveeru has learned that they both killed Najeeb because “he had tried to establish a relationship with the girl” and that he was called and asked over to Maafannu Masroora by Hana. Based on their confessions their detainment has been extended to another 15 days by the court. Murrath had been released on October 18 of last year under the second chance program while he was serving a 12 year prison sentence for a drug related offence, Police detailed. Police added that Murrath had only served three years, three months and 22 days of his 12 year sentence when he was released. In addition to the 12 year sentence, Murrath had also been sentenced to another 12 years for a similar drug related offence, two months for theft and robbery and in 2005 he was sentenced to four months for escaping from jail. Murrath’s criminal record according to Police also include two months in prison for assault, six months for disobeying orders and another six months in house arrest for theft. Furthermore, Police said that a drug related case in 2008 against Murrath had been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s office while a similar offence in 2010 was still under investigation. Police detailed that various other cases were also be investigated which involved the male suspect, while most of the sentences against Murrath had not even been enforced thus far. While Murrath’s criminal record is quite extensive, Police said that the female suspect Hana had no previous record of committed crimes. The brutalized body of Najeeb was discovered inside a large garbage can in a second floor room of Maafannu Masroora. Reports indicate that Najeeb’s face had been mauled with a sharp object at the time of discovery.
