Bodies of inmates sent overseas for autopsy amid police probe

The bodies of the prison inmates who died on the same day earlier in February have been sent overseas for an autopsy.
The two - Ibrahim Suhail, 53, Dhafthar No: DR439, and Hassan Niyaz, 45, Dhiggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo – were inmates at the Hulhumale’ Prison.
They both died in hospitals on February 2.
The police, who are investigating both custodial deaths, said that their bodies were flown to India on Wednesday for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
According to Maldives Correctional Service, Suhail, who suffered a stroke last year, had died a week after he was taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after his health condition deteriorated.
The Correctional Service added that he had also developed pneumonia while at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Niyaz died at the Hulhumale’ Hospital the same day after reportedly suffering a “medical emergency.”
Photos were later shared on social media purportedly of bruises on the body of one of the inmates, sparking allegations that death wasn’t natural.
