China Commits to Economic and Development Support for the Maldives

China has pledged wide-ranging financial and developmental assistance to the Maldives as part of efforts to help the country address its ongoing economic challenges, according to Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua.
Speaking at a press conference focused on bilateral ties, Ambassador Kong stated that China is collaborating closely with the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to finalise detailed plans for financial support, with documentation expected to be completed by the end of September. He emphasised that the proposed aid will be structured to avoid adding any financial strain on the Maldivian government and will include flexible, long-term repayment arrangements.
Ambassador Kong expressed confidence in the government’s ability to stabilise the economy and encouraged the public to trust the administration’s leadership.
In addition to financial assistance, the ambassador highlighted several grant-funded projects underway, including the development of a hospital in Villimalé, now in its design bidding phase, and plans to modernise roads in Villimalé and Malé. Preparations are also progressing on the construction of 50 council offices, following the completion of feasibility studies.
Ambassador Kong described President Muizzu’s recent state visit to China as a turning point in bilateral relations, noting that 11 Memoranda of Understanding were signed in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, construction, renewable energy, and education. He reiterated China’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development across these key sectors.
