Maldives strengthens weather monitoring capacity with new station at Maafaru airport

Maldives has taken a significant step in enhancing its meteorological infrastructure with the establishment of the country's sixth manual weather data station at Maafaru International Airport.
This new addition marks a substantial boost to the aviation industry in the island nation, providing pilots and airline operators with more reliable and timely weather information.
Maafaru International Airport, recognised as one of the busiest airports in the Maldives during peak travel seasons, previously relied on an automatic weather station at the facility itself, while the nearest manual station was located at Hanimaadhoo Airport. This arrangement necessitated the manual collection and transmission of weather data through alternative sources, potentially introducing delays and reducing accuracy for flights operating through Maafaru.
With the commissioning of the new manual station, the total number of manual weather forecasting stations across the Maldives has increased to six. The existing network includes stations in Hanimaadhoo, Kadhdhoo, Kaadedhdhoo, Gan, and Hulhule', each playing a crucial role in collecting comprehensive meteorological data across the archipelago.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has emphasised that the aviation industry requires hourly updates on weather conditions at airport locations, as well as timely notifications of any weather changes that could affect flight operations. The addition of the Maafaru station is expected to significantly improve forecast accuracy and response time for pilots and airline operators using the airport.
The MET Office confirmed that it continues to provide essential weather information not only to the aviation industry but also to fishermen and marine vessels, while maintaining round-the-clock monitoring to alert the public about the impacts of changing weather conditions.
