Speech Therapy Services Launched at Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital

Speech therapy services have been launched at Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital, marking the first time such services have been introduced in an atoll hospital.
Until now, speech therapy had only been available at two regional hospitals within the atolls, at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital and Addu Equatorial Hospital. With the launch of the service in Dhidhdoo, Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital becomes the first atoll-level hospital to provide this service.
According to the hospital, the government initiative was carried out with significant assistance from the Dhidhdhoo Dhiggaa Foundation in securing a therapist. The service would greatly ease difficulties faced by the individuals who previously struggled to access the service.
Registration for speech therapy services at Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital is now open and can be completed through a QR code shared on the hospital's social media pages. Around 30 people registered for the service during the first day.
This service is available to people of all ages, and will be offered daily except Fridays.
Speech therapy is most commonly sought for children with speech difficulties. With the launch of this service in Dhidhdhoo, those seeking treatment in the region will have easier access to care within their atoll.
The hospital acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Health, the Island Council, the Atoll Council and the constituency’s Parliament Member in launching the service.
Meanwhile, efforts are also underway to launch speech therapy services in Noonu Atoll. Both speech and occupational therapy are considered vital for children with developmental challenges. However, the Maldives continues to face challenges in this area due to a shortage of qualified professionals in the field.
